Playing For Keeps Episode One

CoverThis is it! Episode One! In which we meet our hero and she meets a supervillain, and then several superheroes. Neither encounter is a very good one.

Please take a little time to give some love to the fabulous people who have helped me out in this fabulous venture. Check them in the Blogroll or the First Wave Volunteers page!

  4. Playing For Keeps - Episode 1 has been released…

My favorite podcaster/author has launched her superhero novel “Playing for Keeps” today, and I was able to read the first few chapters, and it is excellent.  Here’s the description for the novel:Playing for Keeps is a free novel delivered……

  5. Very cool! I loved it. But it was driving me crazy trying to figure out why the story seemed so familiar. I went through my old mp3’s and found “Barry Koleman, Hero” And all came clear. :) You should post that one here.

  6. Would like to listen to this but the link is broken. Will not download directly or via iTunes and will not play in the pop up, pity.

  7. Link now working but at less than 1Kb per sec. 2 hours to download 1 episode!

I love Murs’ output and was looking forward to this. i am currently downloading from Podiobooks at 165 KB/s so no problem at my end. Sorry to gripe but disappointment is is an unpleasant experience.

  8. Love it, love it, love it! This is, likely, just the push I need to chec out more Mur…I mean, more than what I’ve heard on Escape Pod. Definitely on my list of top EP readers, no doubt about it. Thanks, am looking forward to the next bit :)

  9. Awesome job! I have only listened to you through the venerable Escape Pod feed and I am impressed. I can’t wait for the next episode. I am not sure when that will be but now would be perfect. Thanks

  10. Hi, guess I’ll get this one from Podiobooks now that it’s on there.

  11. Mr_Wednesday - sorry you’re having trouble subscribing here. email chris miller (the guy who posted the Stories of the Third Wave) if you want to keep working on what the problem is.

  12. I should have posted this back when I first listened to the story (when it first came out).

The story is quite interesting and I really enjoy it. That said, the first thing that ran through my mind when I began listening to the story was comparison to the Union Dues line of stories on Escape Pod. Both are alternative ways to look at the typical hero story and both generally have a sympathetic hero character (granted, this is more of a stretch). I wonder if and to what extent these stories might have inspired Mur. Regardless, I really enjoy the series and can’t wait for the next installment.

  13. Areece: thanks for listening- The novella this was based on was completed a couple of years ago before I ever heard Union Dues. This has been in the works for quite some time.

  14. Hmm. Then I wonder if Union Dues was influenced by Playing for Keeps.

  15. Areece: heh - also unlikely as DeRego hasn’t seen a manuscript of the story. They’re both original works. :)

  16. Hi Mur.
I just finished listening to Episode 1 of your story, Playing for Keeps. I thought I better take a minute here and leave a comment instead of postponing it. A little bit before Christmas, even Geek Fu Action Grip was new to me, and I can’t say I am up to date with all your latest material. In a few, I am very excited by Playing for Keeps, already put it into my podcatcher. I like everything about it. It has amazing ideas, amazing potential. I’ve read superhero comics for over 23 years, and hardly find things these days that hold my interest for long or seem to tell anything I haven’t seen before. But your story does. I also thought that the superhero genre never worked well as a novel (but I’ve ordered some DC and Marvel novels recently nonetheless). Keepsie is a great character, and I love the way you’ve described her. Need I say she has a cool original power? Every time I made up superheroes for a story or an RPG session I hardly got beyond flight and super-strength. The most original thing I ever wrote down was a woman that could transform kinetic damage to her body into strength and mind control, and that idea had come to me in a dream. I’ll definitely keep listening and tell all my friends about your book. Since I have started my own bi-lingual podcast, I’d like to run your promo for PfK there in my next episode. (Please see website link.)

    Best regards, N.

  17. So, I was gonna listen to Ep 1 and see if I liked it, but the link does not seem to work… or maybe I’m doing it wrong?

  18. [...] And then you can go listen to the first episode right now! [...]

  19. Okay, maybe I missed something but this is absolutely driving me nuts!! Are there any second wavers?!? The 1st wavers are the parents of the 3rd wavers, but I’ve heard no mention of any second wavers. I am in the midst of Chapter 7 so it may get explained further on, but I decided to do a Google search and wound up here. I’m totally loving the story so far. It’s my favorite of all your works to date! Thank you for being so prolific yet maintaining a high quality standard.

  20. [...] you are interested in listening to this story, the first episode can be downloaded for free at Playing for Keeps or at Podiobooks.com. Or if you would rather read the story, go download the free PDF or purchase [...]
